Cascades Sonoco specializes in developing recycleable and/or repulpable functional barriers based on extruded and water-based coatings that protect your products.

Both standard and customized barrier formulations offer wax-free protection against water, moisture, oil, grease, blocking, skid, oxygen, dirt, flame, and many other conditions that can affect product performance and stability. Whether your goal is to maintain the freshness chain or prepare products for the rigors of distribution, Cascades Sonoco can draw from a wide variety of substrates, resins, and additives to build a custom solution around the needs of your product.  Our linerboard reduces  that is recycleable or repulpable.

    Water Barrier

    Water and excessive moisture can degrade the structural integrity of your package and reduce its stacking strength. The presence of water can also damage the quality of the product inside the package. That’s why water resistant coatings are so widely used. Wet strength is particularly important with outdoor storage, document storage, building products, construction, and grocery.

    Oil & Grease Resistance

    We’ve all experienced the frustration of spilling oil or grease on a new shirt. Cascades Sonoco offers no-stain solutions to protect your products from virtually every source of oil and grease, including motor oil, olive oil, French fries, take-home trays, and frozen foods. Industries that typically benefit from oil and grease barriers include automotive supplies, petroleum products, bakery, dry goods, frozen meats, and food oils.

    Release Platform

    Release coatings are specially designed to prevent adhesion of products to packaging. Our water-based coatings FDA-compliant, allowing for direct and indirect contact with foods such as frozen goods, meats, poultry, fish, and bakery products. Release platform solutions are printable and hot-melt gluable, with many of them being 100% recyclable and 100% repulpable.

    Our release platform barriers protect against fiber tears and provide a safe and cost-effective alternative to plastic bags and curtain-coated waxed products. Cascades Sonoco provides grease resistant, water-repellent, and water-resistant properties.

    Oxygen Barrier

    Air is the enemy of most foods. Too much air causes food to spoil and become less palatable.  Even worse, spoiled food can become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria, which thrive on oxygen.  Cascades Sonoco preserves taste and extends the shelf life of food by adding an oxygen barrier to the desired substrate. Moisture barriers, which are designed to keep moisture in or lock it out (depending on the requirements of the contents), are often combined with an oxygen barrier in food packaging.

    Abrasion Resistance

    Cascades Sonoco offers water- and extrusion-based coating and laminated solutions to protect against the abrasive quality of liner board.  Abrasive resistant coatings keep products from scuffing and preserve graphics and other package information.  This is especially important when maintaining your brand’s image during shipping and distribution is deemed priority.  Cascades Sonoco applies abrasion resistant properties to paper and non-woven substrates, and most coatings are fully recyclable and printable.
